U2: #1 IN IRELAND

Real surprising headline, right? Well, you may not know that U2 have a new #1 single in their homeland, which you can't get here in the U.S. It's actually U2 with a number of other musicians, including Shane MacGowan, Sinead O'Connor, Andrea Corr and others. I ordered it as an import from Amazon, and it's actually out of stock, but I got a message saying that they'll charge me when they get more in stock. All of the profits go to the Irish Cancer Society. You can see the video at U2.com.

In other U2 news, the band has signed a 12 year deal with concert promoters Live Nation. Unlike Madonna's deal with Live Nation, U2's doesn't include recordings - they're sticking with Universal, who owns their entire catalog. But it does include tours, merchandise, their web site and I think their fan club. And hopefully this means that they'll still be touring in 12 years. For now, though, I'm looking forward to their next album. These guys are totally in uncharted territory at this point: they're a still-relevant band, three decades on. No other band has been able to do that, not even really The Rolling Stones. The Stones' last album was great, but U2 still seem to be able to make new music that really matters.
